An Introduction. Empty
PostSubject: An Introduction.   An Introduction. EmptySun Sep 04, 2011 12:53 am

A man walks into the classroom, just after students are seated. They remember having seen him in the Great Hall during the welcome feast, but didn't quite put together that he was really a Professor until now. He seems a bit young to be a Professor, at least he looks young. His height, and the green hair sprouting from his head hardly help his youth-like appearance. He stands in front of the desk, his desk to be precise, and clears his throat. Calling even more attention to himself, and a quiet that kills the murmurs of a few students. A pause, then he smiles, and begins speaking. It's obvious he has a foreign accent. He doesn't quite pronounce words correctly, but all can understand what he says. He's fluent, that much is sure. And he loves his subject, the tone says it all.

Good Morning. I am Professor Hisoka Gaikotsu. I will be your teacher this year, and any other that you choose to take Arithmancy. I have been a teacher at Hogwarts for a few years. But I would certainly not consider myself to be well versed with the school. I am, however, very good at what I do. And I think you will learn a lot in this class. About yourself and the world around you.

The curriculum will require you to know a few things about yourself, which are very simple, and I should hope you know. Most needed of all is your full name. And the correct spelling. As well as your birthday. Day, month, and year. If you do not know these things, you may want to do a little research. And you may want to know those things for your family, as well. And your close friends. As odd as it sounds.

In this class we will learn about the divine, and incredible properties of numbers. From predicting the future, to simple telling a persons personality. And so on. There are an amazing amount of things numbers can tell us. And hopefully this year you'll be a little closer to demystifying numbers.

Are there any questions?

A girl in a Ravenclaw Uniform looks around the class, looking for anybody who raised their hand. She then raises hers and speaks

Uh-my name is Evanna. Now, not to be cheeky but isn't predicting the future Divination? I just had that last class and trust me-it isn't much fun.

She then flinches at her comment-hoping it doesn't affect how the teacher thinks of her.

He waits. Surveying the students, while they gather up the courage to speak. It takes a second, but finally a girl raises her hand. And he chuckles.

Thank you for asking, Evanna. It is true that predicting the future is Divination. However, the subject Divination can be very....unpredictable. You have many means to get to your answer, all of which can lead to different answers. Such as...reading tea leaves, and coming up with one thing, then looking into a crystal ball and getting something else. It's not to say that both won't happen, eventually. But divining through Arithmancy can get you more precise results. Tarot cards can tell you in the future you will have fame. Tea leaves might tell you you will be an entertainer. But Arithmancy can narrow that down farther to singer.

He pauses for a moment, maybe deciding that he's rambling. Or thinking of something new to say.

Arithmancy takes a different mind, than divination does. We that excel at this subject, are much more logical. We need to know how things work. And the steps taken to get there. Arithmancy is equation. Life is equation. So we break it down, to understand it. And learn more.

Another pause, then he muttered something barely audible.

Not to mention those loons in the Divination department like to say everything's a "sign" of death.

Oh-okay. I can live with this.

she sighs, smiling. This is something totally different! It won't require her to make up things totally ridiculous. She caught 2 of the other students making faces at her. Of course-the Divination professors pets. They always were overly obsessed with Divination, it was annoying.

Um-I forgot to buy the required books. Do you have any extras?

she meekly asks this and starts twiddling with her thumbs. This was the first time she's ever been so unprepared.

Mihaela sighed, leaning back in her chair as Professor Gaikotsu went over his usual introduction. Arithmancy was a class she greatly enjoyed and had been taking. Next year, she hoped the Professor would allow her to go into Advanced Arithmancy Studies. Twirling her quill in her fingers, she was itching to get to work. As he finished his speech, she looked up expectantly to begin only to have a fellow Ravenclaw student raise her hand and ask what was, in her opinion, a first year question. She rolled her eyes, setting her quill back down. Nothing worse than comparing Arithmancy to Divination.

He got through the differences quicker than she would've thought possible and she picked her quill back up. Parchment was sitting in front of her, along with her book, ready for anything the Professor might throw their way. And then her fellow Ravenclaw asked to borrow a book. Mihaela sighed audibly. She couldn't help herself.

If I do say so myself, shouldn't you have remembered the required book for a class you decided to take?

Her voice came out soft and quieter than most would expect. She glanced over at the girl and raised an eyebrow.

"If I do say so myself, shouldn't you have remembered the required book for a class you decided to take?" a Ravenclaw girl asked, sounding annoyed.

"yes, yes, I'm so sorry," she said, turning towards Professor Gaikotsu. "Since the Muggle Studies teacher quit I was left to take Arithmancy-no possible offence by the way-and absent mindidly I bought a Muggle Studies textbook instead of an Arithmancy one," she said turning back to Mihaela. But still-thats no excuse. I should have checked my list. And it doesn't help that I'm Head girl. I should be more prepared," Evanna said, mumbling her words. She then turning back to face the professors. He just nodded at her and gave her a textbook. He then continued on with the lesson. She looked down to her textbook-quite embarrassed.

Mihaela raised her eyebrow at the girl as she fluttered through her words. She was about to turn back to her desk when something the girl-Evanna she believed she said her name was-said caught her attention.

"Head Girl?" she scoffed. She really didn't mean to, it was a rather unflattering thing for a young lady to do after all. But this, she decided was a special circumstance. "You are what...a fourth year? Maybe a fifth year. Maybe. How then, can you be a Head Girl? After all," Mihaela felt her lip twitch in a slight smirk, "You're barely able to be prepared for your own classes, let alone maintaining the order and discipline of the school. Which is the job of Head Girl and Boy, in case you were unaware."

She turned back in her seat, "Hence why Head Boy and Girl are Seventh Years which you, Fourth Year, are not."

Evanna twiddled with her fingers, looking down at her desks. "The headmaster thought I was ready," she then looked up and said, "and so what? Maybe he thought I was mature enough," she said gathering someone some courage. "Just mind your own business. I promised I'll be prepared by the next class." She turned back around then said to the professor, "I'm sorry for all these interruptions."

Apollina watched the two girls. She did find it rather odd that a fourth year was a head girl, usually they were seventh years.

Only the first day of classes and there's already drama.

"Do not take this to offense, nor am I taking 'sides', as I was just observing, but everybody forgets supplies once in awhile, what's the big deal?" she questioned Mihaela.

Evanna smiled at Apollina. Of course the girl wasn't on anybody's side but at least she was sensible. She probably thought that Mihaela and Evanna were acting dumb. Right now, Evanna would sort of agree. "Yes, Apollina's right-everyone forgets some supplies sometimes. And please Mihaela, I don't want us to fight. Can we just get on with our class and forget about each other, even if you already did, well I mean-um, sorry for rambling," she turned back around wondering about the time. Well-this was the last class for the day and then Evanna could go back to her dorm and just chat with her friends.
